Environmental statistics:

The concept of global warming is generally understood to be a significant risk to the planet; a sustained increase in CO2 concentrations could well result in a disastrous change the temperature of the earth.
Businesses are now being asked by the Government to reduce their “carbon footprint” - the measure of the amount of CO2 emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels as part of their everyday operations.
Transport in the UK is responsible for c25% of CO2 emissions - road transport accounting for c75% of this*. Transport operations, therefore, are a logical place to start looking for reductions in CO2 emissions within a business.

Reducing the Carbon Footprint:

There are two methods of reducing the Carbon Footprint of your business – reduce the emissions at source, or through emissions trading.
“Emissions trading” is emerging as a key instrument in the drive to reduce CO2 emissions. Managed by the Government, participating companies are allocated allowances, each allowance representing a tonne of the relevant emission, e.g. CO2. Emissions trading allows companies to emit in excess of their allocation of allowances by purchasing allowances from the market. Similarly, a company that emits less than its allocation of allowances can sell its surplus allowances.

However, companies who either run vehicles themselves or outsource their transport are in an enviable position; there are usually a number of ways to improve operational efficiency and reduce the overall level of CO2 emissions. In some circumstances these reductions could provide additional credits for emissions trading in the marketplace.

How Can Key3 Help You Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

Improving operational efficiency generally reduces miles travelled and removes vehicles from the roads. Efficient driving, the use of modern, efficient vehicles and alternative fuels helps to reduce fuel used and, therefore, emissions created. Optimising the use of IT, e.g. route scheduling systems, vehicle telematics, etc. enables emissions to be monitored and managed.

Key3 has extensive experience in delivering significant savings in all the areas that will lead to reducing the carbon footprint of your transport operation.
